H5 Bird Flu Biosecurity Workshops & Webinars

Biosecurity is critical in poultry production to prevent the introduction and spread of infectious diseases, pests, weeds and contaminants. The detection and subsequent spread of H5 Bird Flu (clade 2.3.4.4b) in mainland Australia presents a significant risk for commercial poultry production in NSW. Given the epidemiology of the current strain of H5 bird flu, there is an increased risk of infection in commercial poultry production and subsequent declaration of an emergency animal disease (EAD) response.

There is an opportunity to uplift biosecurity across the poultry industry by providing a specific training program focused on H5 bird flu and emergency management awareness, and providing support the enhancement of site-specific biosecurity management plans (BMPs). 

A series of face-to-face workshops, developed and tailored to different poultry production systems, processors groups, or geographical locations in NSW will support producers to develop, review and update biosecurity management plans, understand an EAD response including destruction, disposal and decontamination (DDD) requirements, and provide an opportunity to promote additional avenues of support.

Online webinars, also tailored to meet attendees, will complement face-to-face workshops and allow participants to receive training when other factors limit their ability to attend workshops in person.

These workshops and webinars will provide an opportunity for participants to build capacity, share knowledge and build networks. The implementation of biosecurity management plans and increasing understanding of EAD requirements, will help mitigate the risk of H5 incursions and support producers understand how they can return to production sooner in the event of an infection of H5 bird flu on their farm.
