More than 100 poultry industry stakeholders participated in MINTRAC’s recent online FlockSafe Poultry Biosecurity Management Planning webinar, reinforcing the strong level of industry focus currently being placed on practical biosecurity capability, operational risk management and preparedness across the sector.

Delivered in collaboration with Tugrul Durali from Avian Management Services (AMS) - a specialist consultancy supporting intensive poultry farming and hatchery operations across all genetic levels - the webinar formed part of the broader FlockSafe Poultry Industry Biosecurity Management Planning Training program currently being supported through MINTRAC’s collaborative partnership with Skills Insight. * MINTRAC is supporting the management of this Jobs and Skills Council project as part of our collaborative partnership with Skills Insight.

Drawing on extensive experience across poultry production systems, animal welfare, biosecurity management and operational advisory services, Dr Durali facilitated discussions focused on practical approaches to biosecurity planning and operational risk mitigation within poultry environments.

The session brought together participants from across a broad cross-section of the poultry industry, including producers, processors, broiler operations, egg producers and other poultry stakeholders, to explore practical approaches to biosecurity management planning and operational risk mitigation.

Across the two-hour webinar, discussions focused on several key areas impacting day-to-day biosecurity management, including:

  • pathways for disease entry and operational exposure risks
  • practical site access and movement controls
  • rodent and wild bird management strategies
  • water sanitation and treatment practices
  • litter management approaches
  • cleaning and hygiene controls
  • environmental and ventilation management practices

Interactive live polling conducted throughout the webinar generated strong engagement from participants and provided valuable insight into several common operational focus areas currently being experienced across industry environments.

A number of consistent themes emerged during the session, with wild bird exposure, rodent management, visitor and contractor movement controls, and water sanitation identified among the most significant current biosecurity concerns raised by participants.

The webinar also highlighted the operational importance of maintaining effective cleaning protocols, practical site access management and environmental controls as part of broader biosecurity planning approaches.

Importantly, the session reinforced the reality that biosecurity management is increasingly being viewed by industry not simply as a compliance consideration, but as a critical operational and business continuity priority requiring ongoing review, adaptation and workforce awareness.

“The level of industry participation demonstrated the importance of continuing to support practical capability development, knowledge sharing and operational preparedness across the poultry sector.” - Mick Crouch, CEO, MINTRAC

The strong level of participation and engagement throughout the webinar further demonstrated the appetite across industry for practical discussion, applied operational guidance and continued capability development opportunities focused on real-world biosecurity challenges.

The FlockSafe program has also included an important monitoring and evaluation component designed to better understand industry practice change and operational trends across participating stakeholders over the course of the project.

Insights gathered throughout the webinar and broader project activities will contribute to the Final Report being submitted to Skills Insight in June 2026, marking the conclusion of the highly successful 18-month program.
