Building skills for the future of Australia’s meat industry

As Australia’s meat processing sector continues to evolve, workforce capability remains one of its most critical priorities.

The industry operates in an environment where expectations around food safety, compliance, quality and operational performance continue to lift. In this context, the role of training, workforce development and industry alignment becomes increasingly important.

MINTRAC’s work sits within this space - supporting industry through training package development, workforce initiatives and ongoing consultation with employers, training providers and government.

A defining characteristic of the sector is its strong culture of collaboration. Across processing plants, retail operations and smallgoods businesses, maintaining a skilled workforce is essential to ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness.

Through direct engagement with industry, MINTRAC works to ensure that training frameworks remain aligned with real operational needs. This includes ongoing consultation across the country, as well as practical initiatives designed to support workforce readiness and capability development.

Events such as Industry Connect further reinforce this approach - bringing together industry leaders, regulators and training stakeholders to share insights and strengthen alignment between policy, training and operational delivery.

As the sector continues to respond to technological change, workforce expectations and global market dynamics, the need for a capable and adaptable workforce will only increase.

Ensuring training systems remain relevant, practical and connected to industry is not a one-off exercise — it is an ongoing process that relies on collaboration, engagement and continuous improvement.
